Care of young trees
Young trees are the urban forests of the future. We can leave a legacy of healthy trees that will span generations. Proper care begins from day one- but is often overlooked.
The poor tree on the right was likely a $400+ sugar maple. Once it was planted it was forgotten- and was strangled by the very ropes intended to get it off to a great start.
The permanent structure of a tree is often defined early in it's life. One small pruning cut made when the tree is planted can eliminate a fatal structural defect later. Weak forks, crossing branches, and co-dominant leaders can cause a tree to fail when it gets larger and heavier.
Corrective cuts are typically small and easily closed by the young tree and are often the difference between life and death.
